NYC Brunch

July 11, 2015

Sunday brunch in New York City can range from subdued and urbane to boisterous and spirited. Choose a restaurant with a menu of wholesome, organic foods or indulge in mimosas preceding waffles and whipped cream. In the city, there is something for everyone.

Many places offer Groupon style discounts. Groupon editors' picks include several popular eateries. In the Sutton area of the city near the United Nations Plaza is Prune, known for specialties like creamy deviled eggs and huevos rancheros, and 10 varieties of bloody marys. For a Parisian milieu, sip champagne and enjoy brioche French toast at Balthazar Restaurant in SoHo. Also in SoHo is David Burke Kitchen, which features berry-speckled French toast. At the North End Grill in Battery Park City, the subtle aroma of a wood-burning grill complements the taste of smoked salmon and charcoal-grilled bacon. Migrate over to Queens and enjoy live piano tunes while savoring eggs Benedict at The Astor Room, a restaurant that was formerly a 1920s movie studio.

For a unique dining experience, take a Bateaux New York two-hour cruise on the Hudson and East Rivers. While admiring breathtaking views from a glass-enclosed boat, imbibe a complimentary glass of champagne and feast on a brunch buffet. Another New York favorite is Blue Note, a jazz club offering two seatings every Sunday with a fixed-price menu that includes one drink and a choice of select entrees. The price also covers a live show performed by accomplished jazz musicians. Both of these restaurants reflect the pinnacle of sophistication. Another live jazz venue is Garage Restaurant and Cafe in the West Village. Add $6 to a fixed-price brunch menu for unlimited mimosas, screwdrivers and bloody marys. Distinctive menu items include French Vanilla Bean Soaked French Toast and Benedict Trilogy.

Some people prefer not to be restricted to brunch hours. Big Daddy's is a fun family favorite that serves breakfast all day at three locations: Gramercy Park, Upper East Side and Upper West Side. Kids love the Berry Berry Yummy Pancakes and chocolate milkshakes. Choose the oat bran pancakes or a low-fat yogurt smoothie for a more healthful brunch. If you dare, a sinfully delicious chocolate experience awaits you at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar in Union Square. While the brunch menu includes a guilt-free omelet, many patrons go straight for the White Chocolate Cream French Toast and chocolate martini.

Whether you want to arrange a commensal brunch that adjoins the family for a special occasion or plan to start a Sunday tradition, New York City will not disappoint.
