New
York's first district remains its most historic. Wall Street’s
investment banks coexist with historic NYC landmarks like
Trinity Church, The Woolworth Building, The American Stock
Exchange, & Battery Park. The World Financial Centers
is still one of the most popular destinations. With the presence
of large financial firms such as American Express, Goldman
Sachs and Oppenheimer, Merrill Lynch, & The Wall Street
Journal it continues to draw in large numbers of business
travelers.
The Financial District is a neighborhood on the southernmost
section of the borough of Manhattan. The neighborhood roughly
overlaps the boundaries of the New Amsterdam settlement in
the late 17th century and has a residential population of
about 30,000. During the day, the population swells to about
300,000.
It also has a growing number of tourist attractions such as
the South Street Seaport, which is located in Civic Center,
and the all-new Sports Museum of America, located at the base
of the Canyon of Heroes where the famed New York City Ticker-tape
parades begin.
Although the term is sometimes used as a synonym for "Wall
Street", the latter term is often applied to the financial
markets as a whole, whereas "the Financial District"
implies an actual geographical location.
